The know-how to balance flash with ambient light is one of the most important things a budding photographer should strive to understand. Once you are able to grasp the technical aspects of this, you will then have the confidence to flex your creativity even more so. Understanding the basic concepts of exposure settings (the relationship between Aperture – ISO – Shutter speed) will prepare you for all the real-time issues that may arise during a photography shoot. What do I adjust to compensate for the quickly changing ambient light (ex. the setting sun)? How do I make the distracting background darker? What if I want to increase the flash to ambient light ratio? Knowing the answers to all these real-world questions will give you the confidence to shoot under any light, any time, and any place. Understanding exposure may sound confusing, but it is surprisingly much easier than you think.
